Momentary Stasis by PR Adams

PR Adams asked me to share his dystopian spacepunk novel, Momentary Stasis. I haven’t read it yet so I don’t have any detailed thoughts, but I like this bit of the blurb:

Humans discover alien technology and start colonizing worlds outside the solar system. Genetic modification produces miracles. Science advances the human condition. And, for the first time in history, the nations of the world have achieved real peace with each other.

But only the elite truly benefit from all the advancements. Most people are still trapped on an Earth ruined by chemical pollution, nuclear accidents, and chaotic weather changes. Rebellious “genies” — genetically engineered servants — cause more harm than good. And global corporations have stripped the idea of nations and freedom of any real meaning.

Maybe a little on the cheesy side, but that’s not always a bad thing!

Neon Exploration: A Quick Review of Hypercage

Craig Lea Gordon asked me to review his cyberpunk novella Hypercage. The book reminds me a bit of Black Mirror — reality with a techno-antisocial twist. Here’s a passage from the beginning that shows what I mean:

His wife’s face [formed] a frown of danger across the restaurant table. He was in trouble.

“What the hell do you think you’re doing?” she demanded.

Dave paused as a set of notifications slotted up the side of his HUD, glowing vividly against the romantic lighting of their corner booth.

+100 XP Mission flare
+1000 XP Enemy craft destroyed
-1500 XP Mission objectives failed
Net score: -100 XP
Daily XP total: 71,265

Minus 100 experience points? And only a hundred XP for mission flare! That was fucking bollocks. He slammed the table with his fist. The two glasses of red wine wobbled uncertainly from the impact.

Hypercage suffers from a little too much emphasis on the futuristic tech at the expense of character development, but the story rollicks along. It won’t bore you. If you need the protagonist to be likable in order to enjoy a story, skip this one. Antihero fans will be fine.

I got sucked in once the main character discovered a VR plugin that was supposed to let his brain multitask, so he could carry on a normal life while maintaining his addiction to the in-universe Eve Online clone.

Reaching the Present (and Discarding Post-Cyberpunk)

The reason I get to do this — futurist punditry — is that the world is changing. That’s why you’re paying attention. That’s why 100k+ people subscribe to /r/Cyberpunk and /r/DarkFuturology, and why The Future is Now raised more than five times its goal on Kickstarter.

So why is the world changing? The reason is the internet. Technology analyst Ben Thompson wrote in a 2013 essay called “Friction”:

“Count me with those who believe the Internet is on par with the industrial revolution, the full impact of which stretched over centuries. And it wasn’t all good. Like today, the industrial revolution included a period of time that saw many lose their jobs and a massive surge in inequality. It also lifted millions of others out of sustenance farming. […] Modern democracies sprouted from the industrial revolution, and so did fascism and communism. The quality of life of millions and millions was unimaginably improved, and millions and millions died in two unimaginably terrible wars.”

We turn to fiction to make sense of the ongoing upheaval because authors’ imaginations, freed from the constraints of current reality, can point to landmarks ahead that are otherwise hidden from mundane minds. Fiction serves as a telescope into tomorrow, suggesting the possibilities that will be software plans and manufacturing specs after a few more decades. Fifty years can sound like a long time, but remember how quickly the techno-dystopia crept up on us.

Seminal cyberpunk works like Neuromancer and Blade Runner posited a world of antiheroes struggling against large opaque forces — the power on both sides coming from the manipulability of information in a networked world. And the domain of information was not limited to keyboards and screens: consider Rachael’s identity in Blade Runner, and the Tessier-Ashpool clan’s manipulation of physical space in Neuromancer.

Where do we go from here? Post-cyberpunk is a disappointing genre; it’s not cynical enough. Biopunk / genepunk excites me much more. To be honest, I don’t see recent extensions of the “high tech, low life” theme as refutations of cyberpunk, or even separate genres — rather they are continuations and sub-genres. Maybe I am, ironically, clinging to the past…

A Taste For Dystopian Imaginings

When I was six years old, living near Echo Park, Los Angeles, I began hiding in the library. (My father was abusive; my siblings dysfunctional.) I’ve worked for libraries, institutions that become a drug to evade reality (whatever that is). Early on I was a reading addict, science fiction more than anything else — if you call Freddy the Pig and Grimm’s Fairy Tales “science fiction”. My friends at grade school laughed at me; they were reading Robert Heinlein. Soon I was reading science fiction too but I started with a baby step: Andre Norton before I graduated to Heinlein, Asimov, Alfred Bester, Jack Vance, etc.

By the time I was ten years old (1954), I was living in the future to escape my present. Unfortunately, as I reached my forties (late 1990s), I began to observe that the future had become my present. Dystopia tends to suit my gloomy, pessimistic, depressed, atheist world view. Orwell’s 1984, already based on Stalinism, bloomed even more bitter fruit in Kim’s North Korea. Huxley’s Brave New World forecast genetic engineering. As a teacher for a while, I struggled unsuccessfully to stamp out bullying. I experienced the reality — though fortunately less brutally — of the violent scapegoating in Shirley Jackson’s “The Lottery” and William Golding’s Lord of the Flies. I learned about the threat to our biosphere portrayed by John Bruner’s The Sheep Look Up and Stand on Zanzibar. Philip K. Dick’s drug-inspired nightmares seemed to be coming true around me. Luckily I never delved into psychedelic madness, but I knew plenty of people who did, sometimes fatally.

I screamed inside, “It’s no longer an escape into fantasy; it’s a horrible world and it’s all coming true around me!” I stopped reading science fiction for about five years. Then as I reached my sixties and now early seventies, I began to meditate on my mortality, surprised to be alive. My abusive father died of a heart attack at the age of forty-three around 1965. As a child, I was pathologically shy with women; I thought I would never get laid. I was flunking out of college during the 1959 Bay of Pigs crisis, which is perhaps the closest our world ever came to nuclear war (On the Beach, Dr. Strangelove, etc). As panicked students at UC Berkeley (the site of my personal flunking meltdown) huddled gloomily in the student union, a young lady gave strong hints that she was ready to spend what might be our last night on earth in one of the oldest human consolations for our existential dilemma, “rolling in each other’s arms”. I was too crippled by my personal angst to take advantage. Just as well.

I eventually rebooted at Pierce Junior College in LA, where I met an intelligent chick who was depressed by her microscopic bra size. Fifty years of marriage later — plus one daughter who recently wedded her girlfriend of two decades — I eagerly hope that humans will encounter extraterrestrial life before I croak. As I read in an excellent nonfiction book, Lee Billings’ Five Billion Years of Solitude, I think it might come true.

On the other hand, well-suited to my taste for dystopian imaginings, there are abundant sci-fi books about alien monsters and invasions, such as War of the Worlds, Day of the Triffids, Starship Troopers, and so on. Remember in our world’s history, when technologically advanced societies discover less adept societies (Europeans in Australia and North America, for example) the latter groups generally fare very poorly. Perhaps it’s a good thing that nobody has beaten the light-speed barrier and dropped out of our skies. Or maybe they are here already, just waiting to enslave us, eat us, or toss us out.
